With a view to bring down logistics costs and
to compress delivery schedules, Bharat
Heavy Electricals Ltd is now involving Indian
Railways and private port operators. The new
arrangements seek to override problems faced
in the shipment of heavy cargo through land.
BHEL's Trichy unit that manufactures boilers for
power plants has booked 40 rakes to start with.
These rakes left Tiruchi last month to Sakthi
Nagar in Uttar Pradesh, with 3,000 tonnes of
materials, for five projects in Uttar Pradesh and
Madhya Pradesh. The material will be
offloaded at Sakthi Nagar yard, which is owned
by Indian Railways. From there, it will be sent to
the project sites which are less than 100 km
away, a BHEL official was quoted in the media.
BHEL is now planning to start similar services
along with Indian Railways to cater customers
in northern and western India. The Trichy unit is
also looking at using seaports as alternate
logistics solution and is learnt to be in talks
with Marg Group, developers of the Karaikal
port on the east coast.
