Power Grid Corporation of India is
planning to enter into joint venture
agreements to help states build
their local power transmission network.
A source informed that the Central
transmission utility that has several joint
ventures for transnational and interstate
power transmission was now
planning to enter the intra-state domain.
PGCIL is believed to be in talks
with state utilities in Orissa, Sikkim
and Assam, among some others, to
initiate these state-level joint
ventures. These joint ventures will
help improve the local grids of
states, especially those where
development of bulk evacuation
lines has not kept up with increasing
power generation capacity and the
growth in consumers.
According to information available
with Electrical Monitor, PGCIL so far has
formed six joint ventures with private
sector entities for setting up
transnational and inter-state
transmission lines. It also has JVs in
other areas like energy efficiency.
