Power Grid Corporation of India
will be the facilitator for India's
first Smart Grid and Smart City
project, R.N. Nayak, CMD, PGCIL,
said in his keynote address during
Elecrama 2012. PGCIL is scheduled to
have a meeting of IT-solution providers
and other stakeholders on February 17,
2012, he elaborated.
Dwelling on the rather novel
concept of Smart Grid, Nayak said that
several explanations exist and hence
the subject cannot be defined uniquely.
A Smart Grid, as he pointed out, would
be a two-way interface between the
utility and consumer, and more
importantly, would be a system that
would be "commercially independent".
Nayak highlighted that the
growing renewable energy capacity in
the country would call for efficient
power transfer, and hence Smart
Grids could play a vital role. He noted
that India currently had 21,000 mw
of renewable energy capacity
(including 14,000 mw from wind
alone), out of a total installed base of
1,85,000 mw. The share of renewable
energy is likely to shoot up from the
current 3 per cent to around 15 per
cent over the next decade.
PGCIL was on the lookout for a pilot
project (location) where all sorts of
renewable sources like wind, solar,
biomass, etc. The Smart Grid will aim
to integrate all this intermittent
sources of renewable energy. Nayak
said that a coastal city would be
finalized in the next one or two
months. The renewable Smart Grid
concept will also then be extended to a
Smart City whereby all other services
like transport, security, waste
management, etc will be integrated
into the Smart Grid.
Apart from IT solution providers,
the meeting scheduled in Delhi on
February 17, will see the participation
of companies providing advanced
metering infrastructure (AMI),
renewable energy generators, electric
vehicle manufactures, energy storage
technology providers, etc. The Smart
City is targeted for completion in the
next two years and it would be a joint
effort between several stakeholders,
Nayak explained.
