Jaypee Powergrid Ltd, a joint venture between Jaiprakash Power Ventures Ltd (Jaypee Group) and Central transmission utility Power Grid Corporation of India Ltd is scheduled to soon begin commercial operations on its 214-km power transmission line in Himachal Pradesh. The line will help power evacuation from the 1,000-mw Karcham-Wangtoo hydropower project in the northern state. The JV in which PGCIL has a minority holding of 26 per cent was set up to carry out the business of power transmission. JPL was granted the transmission licence to build, maintain and operate the 400kV doublecircuit Karcham Wangtoo-Abdullapur transmission system involving (A) LILO of 400kV double-circuit Baspa-Nathpa Jhakri transmission line at Wangtoo (B) 400kV double-circuit Karcham Wangtoo Abdullapur quad conductor transmission line and (C) extension of PGCIL's 400/200kV substation at Abdullapur in Uttar Pradesh.

PGCIL has formed similar JVs with IPPs for project-specific transmission infrastructure.
