Power Grid Corporation of India is
likely to soon complete the
strengthening of transmission
lines between India and Nepal for 40 mw
additional transfer of power to Nepal. In
a status report to the power ministry,
PGCIL informed that with
most of the work
completed the project will
be fully completed by end
of July 2012.
PGCIL was entrusted the
work of short term
measures for strengthening
of transmission lines to on nomination
basis in December 2011. In this regard,
the agreement between MEA and PGCIL
was signed on February 10, 2012.
During his visit to India in October
2011, Prime Minister of Nepal, Dr.
Baburam Bhattarai had requested
enhancement in the quantum of
electricity to be exported from India to
Nepal, especially during the lean season.
On MEA's request, a meeting of
technical experts from PGCIL, PTC
India and Nepal Electricity Corporation
was convened in November 2011 to
examine the modalities for enhancing
export of power to Nepal.
During the meeting, the
representatives of PGCIL
and PTC India confirmed
that strengthening of cross
border transmission lines
in the short term could be
undertaken in three
months and that this would result in
enhancing export of power to Nepal by
100 mw. However, later PGCIL
conveyed that six months would be
required to implement the short term
measures for strengthening of the
transmission lines.
