The eight-month
long agitation at
the Kudankulam
nuclear power plant site
in Tamil Nadu has
resulted in a cost
escalation of over
Rs.1,400 crore.
It was recently
informed in Parliament
that the completion cost
of the first two units of
the power plant will be
Rs.17,270 crore. In
December 2011, the
completion cost was
estimated at Rs.15,824
crore while actual
expenditure incurred up
to September 30, 2011,
stood at Rs.14,122 crore.
As per the original
plan, the first unit was to
be commissioned in
December 2007. This
was revised to mid-2010
and further to September
2011 when anti-nuclear
protests broke out in
Kudankulam. The first
unit is now expected to
be commissioned in
September and the
second unit in March
next year.
Work on the nuclear
power project came to a
standstill for nearly eight
months as anti-nuclear
activists laid siege to
the site disallowing
engineers to enter the
plant.
