The southern grid will be
integrated to the National Grid
in the first week of January 2014,
Union power minister M. Veerappa
Moily was quoted saying.
Once this integration takes place, the
entire country will be seamlessly
integrated by one grid, and at the same
frequency. The natioanal grid currently
has five components-northern,
southern, eastern, western and northeastern.
Since August 2006, all the subgrids,
except southern, are interconnected.
The southern grid is
currently linked to the other grids
asynchronously (at a different
frequency) through a HVDC line.
The integration of southern grid will
help states like Tamil Nadu, Andhra
Pradesh, Kerala, Karnataka and
Puducherry in getting their due share of
power from the national grid.
The southern grid connectivity is
based on a 800kV transmission line
between Raichur in Karnataka and
Sholapur in Maharashtra. This line is
currently under construction with
completion targeted for end-2013.
Currently, the total transmission
capacity of the inter-regional links to the
southern grid from other grids is 5,150
mw including 3,630 mw between the
southern and eastern grids and 1,520
mw between the southern and western.
The total transmission capacity of
inter-regional links connecting the
regional grids has increased from 14,050
mw to 27,750 mw during the XI Plan
period. A number of inter-regional links
of 44,800 mw have been planned to be
added during XII Plan or the early part of
the XIII Plan period.
