New hydropower plants under study in Odisha

Odisha Hydro Power Corporation is in the process of preparing pre-feasibility report for five new hydro power projects with aggregate capacity 1543 mw.

These projects include Bhimkund and Baigundi project on Baitarani river in Keonjhar district (110 mw), Kanpur small hydroelectric project in Keonjhar district (3 mw), Indrabati pump storage project (600 mw), Balimela pump storage project (510 mw) and Upper Kolab pump storage project.

The state government had signed MoUs with 36 developers for small hydro projects with envisaged generation capacity totaling to 472 mw, involving investment of Rs.2,250 crore.

Till now, three units with capacity of 57 mw have already been commissioned. Other four units with 67 mw capacity are in advanced stage of commissioning. The major units among theses include Kharagpur unit (10 mw), Dumajhari (15 mw), Saptadhara (18 mw) and Baitarani (24 mw).

OHPC's overall generation capacity currently stands at around 2,100 mw (see table) with total power generation in FY12 touching 5,202 Gwh.
