BSES Yamuna gives “MIDAS touch” to distribution network

Em News Bureau ,  Wednesday, March 13, 2013, 17:37 Hrs  [IST]

BYPL GridBSES Yamuna Power Ltd, the Reliance ADAG-promoted power distributor in Delhi, has developed an innovative solution for preventive maintenance of 11kV distribution networks. Called MIDAS (Modular Integrated Distribution Automation System), this intelligent and interactive solution is expected to improve the reliability and quality of the power supply for BYPL’s 12 lakh consumers in East and Central Delhi, an official release by BYPL noted.

MIDAS that was recently launched at the hands of Delhi Chief Minister Ms Sheila Dikshit is capable of reducing downtime to rectify a distribution transformer fault at substations by as much as 80-90 per cent, the release said.

For its pilot project, BYPL tested out MIDAS the Smart Grid solution at the local 11kV level in the over 20 transformers situated in the group housing societies in the IP Extension area. In the coming months, MIDAS will be rolled out in Mayur Vihar Phase 1-2 & 3 that house over 200 cooperative group housing societies.

KEY FEATURES OF MIDAS
  • Developed in-house by IT and O&M departments of BYPL to enable remote monitoring of the health of 11kV network equipment
  • Predicts faults before their occurrence basis symptoms
  • Will help in improving the quality of power supply
  • Reduce the down-time to rectify a distribution transformer fault at substations by 80-90 per cent
  • Substantially reduce maintenance costs
  • Can be retrofitted on the existing distribution network - easily replicable across India
  • 1st phase covering transformers in I P Extension

“BYPL’s in-house R&D initiative MIDAS provides a solution to optimize power distribution network – which is the last mile connectivity for ensuring power for all. I am happy to note BYPL is in talks with other discoms in India to offer them MIDAS capabilities this way Delhi can provide a model that is scalable and sustainable and which helps improve power supply in our country,” noted Ms Dikshit in the release.

BYPL has seen tremendous growth in power demand in its command area and it was imperative to have an intelligent and interactive solution for predictive remote monitoring of the 11kV network equipment, noted BYPL CEO, Ramesh Narayanan. MIDAS will enable quicker location of faults and will predict faults prior to their occurrence. This will not only substantially reduce the time take to address local faults at the locality level, but also improve the quality of power, he added.

MIDAS will integrate Outage Management System (OMS), Geographical Information System (GIS) and SAP. It will help identify affected areas on a geographical map and will facilitate the maintenance crew with route maps, network details for faster response time.
