NTPC’s North Karanpura project cleared, no relocation

Em News Bureau ,  Friday, March 15, 2013, 11:10 Hrs  [IST]

The Cabinet Committee on Investment recently cleared NTPC’s North Karanpura project that was languishing for clearances for over a decade. Located in Jharkhand, the foundation stone of this project was laid ten years ago but the project was dogged by a tussle between NTPC and Coal India Ltd over coal linkages.

Estimated to cost over Rs.14,000 crore the North Karanpura project will now have three supercritical power units of 660-mw each. This would be NTPC’s first project in coal-rich Jharkhand.

The North Karanpura project is located near Tandwa town in Chhatra district. Coal India (CIL) argued that the project location bore 6 billion tonnes of coal reserves and hence demanded project relocation. CIL even withdrew linkages to the project in 2008. Now, the CCI has decided to restore coal linkages to the project with supplies expected to begin in the XIII Plan period.
