The composite production index
of electrical machinery declined
10.5 per cent during FY12,
against a 27 per cent increase in FY11
and 14 per cent in FY10. The rot in the
industry comes out starker when the
drop is juxtaposed against 7 per cent
increase during FY09 when the world
and Indian economy had gone under
due to financial and economic crisis.
Among 48 major electrical machineries
whose production is monitored by
DIPP, as many as 28 recorded year-onyear
declines during FY12, against 6 in
the previous year and 26 during FY09.
The combined price realization of
electrical machinery as measured by
wholesale price index was around 3 per
cent higher over the fiscal, against
stagnation in FY11 and nominal erosion
two years back.
Among the 28 electrical machineries
showing decline during the fiscal, H.T.
insulators and transformers (PDT &
special types) both showed 12 per cent
drop in production, against 12 per cent
and 8 per cent increase, respectively
during FY11. Transformers (Small)
showed 65 per cent drop, against threefold
rise in FY11. Production index of
room air conditioners showed 30 per
cent decline, but the feat was over 61-
64 per cent increase in the preceding
two years. Rubber insulated cable
dropped 38 per cent, against stagnation
in FY11 and 29 per cent reduction in
FY10. Solar power system index
declined 26 per cent, against 49 per cent
shoot-up in FY11, preceded by 9 per
cent erosion in FY10. The output index
for the industry had escalated 40+ per
cent in during FY08 and FY09. Relays,
fuses and switchgears showed
consistent decline over the 11th Plan
period covering FY08 to FY12. Other
electrical machineries with three or
more years of decline during the Plan
included furnace, lifts & elevators, DC
motors, electric welding machines,
transformers, colour picture tubes,
printed circuit boards and stabilizers.
Electrical machineries recording 15
per cent or more increase during FY12
included boilers (20 per cent), which
also was consistent good performer
during the XI Plan. UPS/Inverter/Converter output was also up 20 per
cent, over 26 per cent during FY11 and
18 per cent two years back. Its growth
rate also, like turbines, power capacitors
and washing machines remained in the
positive zone over the plan period.
Production index of cooling towers shot
up 51 per cent, against 2 per cent rise in
FY11 and 23 per cent drop in FY10.
Earlier, cooling towers output index had
increased 33 per cent in FY08 and 45 per
cent in FY09. IC Chips & Transistors
showed 17 per cent increase in FY12,
over 43 per cent during FY11, but drops
in earlier two years.
Among electrical machineries with
three or more years of positive growth
(including FY12) were air & gas
compressors, air conditioners, electric
motors phase one, air break switches &
circuit breakers, aluminium conductors,
electrical switchboard, rubber insulated
cable, and XLPE cables.
