Power Grid Corporation of India and
Kenya Electricity Transmission
Company (KETCO) have signed an
agreement wherein the Indian utility will
train 20 electrical engineers of its
Kenyan counterpart. The endeavour is
being funded by the Korean government
and World Bank.
A dearth of engineers impedes
Kenya's power infrastructure upgrade
programme. The training programme
will help in a quick rollout of trained
engineers, Kenya feels. The African
nation has targeted to double its power
transmission infrastructure over the next
four years.
The 20 electrical, civil and
communication graduate engineers who
were recruited in February this year, have
been undergoing training at the Kenya
Power and Lighting Company (KPLC)
Training School in Ruaraka, Nairobi
where they have been introduced to
practical and theory lessons on the
country's transmission network.
The chief of KETCO was quoted saying
that India that has successfully
revamped its power sector in the last two
decades, was a natural choice for
training the engineers.
