EM NEWS BUREAU ,  Thursday, September 22, 2011, 17:45 Hrs  [IST]

A detailed discussion was recently held between North Eastern Electric Power Corporation Ltd (NEEPCO) and the Assam power minister regarding power sector development in Assam. The meeting between P.C. Pankaj, CMD, NEEPCO and Assam power minister Pradyut Bodoloi, was attended by Additional Chief Secretary of Assam and other senior officials of the Assam government and NEEPCO. Apart from discussing various issues related to power sector development of the northeastern state, the meeting also witnessed a detailed deliberation on the 240-mw Killing hydropower project being implemented by NEEPCO.

The Killing project situated on the Assam-Meghalaya border is amongst the four major hydropower projects that NEEPCO is currently working on. The others are Mawphu (85 mw), Lower Kopili (150 mw) and Garo Hills (500 mw). NEEPCO currently has an installed capacity of 1,130 mw. This accounts for roughly half of the total power capacity in the north-eastern region.
