Delhi Electricity Regulatory Commission
is set to herald the next level of reforms
in the power sector by introducing Smart
Meters. Such meters, now used only in
developed countries, will help consumers
and utilities to get real time information on
supply and consumption. Smart meters
that are based on the advanced metering
infrastructure (AMI) platform are
quintessential aspects of "Smart Grid."
Such meters will help consumers to time
their consumption based on the prevailing
tariff at that moment. For instance, powercentric
appliances like washing machines,
etc could be run at night time when power
tariffs would be low, reflecting the peak
demand then. Shifting the power
consumption from peak to non-peak hours
could help flatten the peak power curve.
