Reliance Infrastructure has
commissioned a new 220kV
compact EHV substation in
Mumbai. Located at Borivali, this is
the fourth such substation erected by
RInfra, the power transmission and
distribution licencee in Mumbai.
Commissioning of this extra high
voltage substation will further
create an opportunity to open new
supply outlets in Borivali East and
its adjacent areas, in case there is
demand for power from those areas,
a statement by Anil Ambani controlled
RInfra observed. The
new substation will also contribute
to reducing ROW issues for the
multiple 33kV cable laying in
already congested areas.
The installation of new
substations was necessitated as
there was no significant capacity
addition on Mumbai's transmission
system for years together despite
the continuous growth in demand.
This had stretched the existing
system to the maximum extent.

RInfra had commissioned
conventional EHV substations at
several areas like Ghodbunder,
Aarey Colony and Versova. The
private utility had envisaged
addition of more EHV substations
in Mumbai's transmission system.
However, with Mumbai facing
severe space constraints, RInfra
came up with a compact EHV
substation that takes up only 10 per
cent of the geographical footprint
when compared with a
conventional (open-air) substation.
Three such compact substations
have already been commissioned.
A statement by RInfra also noted
that the availability of the utility's
Mumbai Transmission 220kV
network, including planned
outages, is 99.75 per cent against
the MERC's target of 98 per cent.
Reliance Infrastructure is now a
transmission and distribution
licensee in Mumbai for next 25
years. The company has already
spent around Rs.700 crore on
strengthening the Mumbai
Transmission Grid.
