EM NEWS BUREAU ,  Thursday, April 26, 2012, 15:12 Hrs  [IST]

Tata Power recently commissioned the second unit of its 2x525-mw Maithon power project in Jharkhand. Located at Dhanbad, the plant is owned and managed by Maithon Power Ltd—a joint venture between Tata Power and Damodar Valley Corporation. The first unit of the Maithon project was commissioned in September 2011. MPL is also India's first instance of public private partnership in the field of power generation.

This development has taken Tata Power's gross generation capacity to over 5,000 mw, making it the largest private sector power generation company. TPC's total capacity currently stands at 5,297 mw including 4,447 mw of thermal power and 850 mw of clean energy.

Speaking on this milestone, Anil Sardana, Managing Director, Tata Power, said, "The synchronization of Maithon 525-mw Unit 2 today is a significant milestone. With this development, Tata Power's gross generation capacity has touched 5,297 mw reaffirming its contribution as the largest integrated power company in India."
