NTPC has formalized orders
worth nearly Rs.3,500 crore
for supplying main plant
equipment for its upcoming 2c660-
mw supercritical power plant at
Solapur in Maharashtra. The Central
PSU, in the coming weeks, is
expected to finalize more orders-all
part of its mega tender of sourcing
main plant equipment for 11
supercritical units aggregating 7,260
mw. Details on the Solapur project
order are given below.
Boilers: The Rs.1,855-crore order
for the boiler package (including a
foreign exchange component of
109.79 million euros) has been placed
on BGR Energy Systems Ltd. The
Chennai-based company, in
February, had emerged as the lowest
bidder (L1) for all the 11 boilers
tendered. As per the tender
conditions, BGR is expected to get
the mandate to supply four more
boiler units of 660-mw each. (See box)

Boilers for Meja |
In a recent development, BGR Energy
Systems has announced that it won the
order for supplying two supercritical
boilers of 660-mw for the Meja power
project in Uttar Pradesh. Valued at
around Rs.1,855 crore, the order is
scheduled for completion in 48
months. The project is being
developed by Meja Urja Nigam Pvt Ltd
- a joint venture between NTPC and
Uttar Pradesh Rajya Vidyut Utpadan

BGR Energy has entered into joint
venture collaboration with Hitachi
Power Europe, Germany for transfer
of technology and equity
participation. The joint venture
partners have set up "BGR Boilers Pvt
Ltd" with 70 per cent equity
participation by BGR Energy and 30
per cent by Hitachi. The joint
venture company has already signed
technical collaboration for transfer of
technology for supercritical boilers of
ratings 660 mw, 700 mw, 800 mw and
1,000 mw. The boilers to be supplied
to NTPC will be manufactured by the
joint venture company.
Turbine Generators: For the
Solapur project, Alstom Bharat Forge
Ltd, a joint venture between Alstom
and Bharat Forge has won the order
to supply the turbine-generator
islands. The order for two TG sets of
660-mw is around Rs.1,570 crore.
Alstom Bharat Forge Power Ltd
(ABFPL) had emerged as the lowest
bidder in NTPC's bulk tender for
supply of 11 units of 660-mw
supercritical TG islands. As per the
tender conditions, ABFPL is also
expected to get awarded an
additional order for supplying to the
3x660-mw Nabinagar power plant
promoted by Nabinagar Power
Generating Company Pvt Ltd
(NPGCPL), a JV between NTPC and
Bihar State Electricity Board (BSEB).
ABFPL is setting up a new
manufacturing facility at Mundra in
Gujarat. A modern plant spread over
120 acres, it is expected to have
annual manufacturing capacity of
5,000 mw for turbines, generators
and auxiliaries. Operations are likely
to start by 2013.
