BSES Yamuna Power Ltd has
entered into an agreement with
HBL Power System Ltd to provide
an e-charging network for “Pedi Cabs” at
nominal charges. A Pedi Cab, officially
branded as "HBL Soleckshaw Pedi Cab"
is a battery-operated rickshaw manufactured
by HBL Power Systems. This
eco-friendly and 100 per cent smokefree
mode of transport will soon ply on
the streets of East and Central Delhi.
Capable of running at a maximum
speed of 30 kmph, Pedi Cabs do not emit
smoke normally associated with
polluting traditional fossil fuel-based
autorickshaws of Delhi.
On providing the e-charge stations
for Pedi Cabs, BYPL CEO Mr Ramesh
Narayanan said, “BYPL seeks to
promote electric vehicles as they are a
more environment friendly option.
Such affirmative steps should be
taken on a large scale, enabling a
positive change and reducing carbon
footprint. Pedi Cabs will prove to be
good for the environment. Pedi Cabs
are environment and labour friendly
means of transportation, which
provides opportunities for more
inclusive growth.”
Delhi has the maximum number of
cars, which is contributing to the city's
increasing pollution levels. Since the
power situation in Delhi is far better
than that of neighbhouring towns, it
will not take much time for
environmentally-conscious people of
Delhi to switch to eco friendly modes of
transport like the Pedi Cabs," added
Narayanan.
These eco-friendly Pedi Cabs, meant
for local transportation carrying 3
persons as well as for goods have been
designed and promoted by Council of
Scientific & Industrial Research (CSIR)
through one of its premier national
R&D Laboratory — Central Mechanical
Engineering Research Institute.
Pedi Cabs being run as a pilot for the
last few months have provided amazing
results. They have shown that not only
has the income of the rickshaw
operators increased; it has also given
them a new dignity and identity.
