EON Electric Ltd, formerly Indo Asian Fusegear Ltd, one of India's leading electric equipment manufacturers, has started production of lithium ion batteries at its plant at SIDCUL, Haridwar. Currently, Eon Batteries are being produced at the pilot plant and the company plans to upgrade the same to India's first greenfield factory for lithium ion batteries within 2012-13, the company said in an official statement.

EON Electric would invest Rs.50 crore in the first phase of setting up the plant spread over 10,000 sqm. The plant would manufacture lithium ion batteries for use in mobile handsets, laptops, cameras, tablets, etc, and would have the first mover advantage in this segment in India. The batteries would be most compact in size and more efficient in operation and capable of delivering high electric current for a better performance of devices without the necessity of regular recharge.

The company is also taking up a proposal with the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) to prepare new Indian standard specifications for lithium ion batteries which will generally be in accordance with the IEC specifications and upgraded to ensure satisfactory performance and safety in usually high ambient temperatures and rough Indian conditions, the release added.
