ABB has opened a new plant
making high-voltage cables in
Huntersville, NC, making it the
company's first high-voltage cable
plant outside Europe.
The plant has a distinctive 131m
extrusion tower, built to allow the
insulation material to cool
symmetrically around the metal cable
conductor. It is ABB's first high voltage
cable plant outside Europe,
and will manufacture high-voltage
transmission cables for both AC and
DC applications.
The cables produced at the new
facility are also well suited to bringing
power from remote wind and solar
installations to the grid. More than
130 people will work at the $90 million
facility built by ABB.
The company has invested more
than $11 billion in the past three years
on acquisitions such as Baldor Electric
and Thomas & Betts as well as
expansions to existing plants. ABB
now employs nearly 30,000 people
across the US, Mexico and Canada.
