Gujarat State Fertilizers &
Chemicals Ltd, a state
government undertaking,
has targeted to have a total
operational wind power capacity of
over 120 mw this year.
GSFC has recently placed on order
on Suzlon Group for setting up 50.4
mw of capacity in Rajkot and
Surendranagar districts. Suzlon will
be supplying 24 units of Suzlon's S88
2.1-mw rated turbines. Speaking to
Electrical Monitor, a senior project
official at GSFC said that these wind
farms will represented the fifth
phase of GSFC's wind power
development programme.
In the first four phases, GSFC set up
73 mw of capacity spread over the
Kutch and Porbandar districts of
Gujarat. Suzlon has supplied turbines
to all the wind power projects of GSFC
so far, the official said. The fifth phase,
scheduled to complete by September
this year, will take GSFC's total
operational capacity to 123.4 mw, the
official noted.
GSFC completed its first wind
power project-a 10-mw farm at the
Bada and Panchetiya villages in Kutch
district-in March 2008. This project
has been registered under the UN
Clean Development Mechanism, and
is earning carbon credits.
Gujarat has gross wind power
potential of 9,675 mw out of which
2,100 mw has been harnessed so far.
Suzlon, incidentally, is involved in
1,200 mw of Gujarat's operational
wind power capacity, both as a
developer (owner) and supplier of
turbines. As developer, Suzlon is
constructing a mega 1,500-mw wind
power park in Kutch district, out of
which 800 mw has been
commissioned till date.
