Crompton Greaves has
planned to enter Brazil,
considered to be the biggest
T&D equipment market in Latin
America. CG will set up a greenfield
plant to manufacture transformers
up to 100 MVA, and a HT
switchgear unit. The transformer
unit with an annual capacity of
6,000 MVA would require an
investment of $30 million. The
objective of this investment,
according to an official release by
CG, is to transform the company
into a significant player in the Latin
American market.
Brazil's T&D equipment market
is estimated at $2.3 billion. The
country is expected to make
substantial investments in its
power sector given that Brazil's
10-year Energy Expansion Plan
has envisaged electricity
consumption to rise from 350,000
GWh to 620,000 GWh, the
statement by CG noted.
The proposed transformer plant
may also be used as an export
platform to cater to other Latin
American countries. CG will set up
the plant through an overseas
subsidiary, and land acquisition for
the facility has already been
completed, the statement added.
