Aggreko supplies temporary power in Tamil Nadu

EM NEWS BUREAU ,  Thursday, June 23, 2011, 11:39 Hrs  [IST]

Untitled - 8.jpgAggreko, the global leader in the supply of temporary power and temperature control services, has successfully commissioned a 6.6-mw gas-fuelled power package for Kaveri Gas Power Ltd. KGPL, an independent power producer, contracted Aggreko when the breakdown of an alternator at a state-owned gas turbine plant reduced the power supply to the Tamil Nadu state, increasing the risk of loadshedding and power shortages.

Aggreko provided a customised power package of 6.6 mw, which included a step-up transformer to achieve high voltage output of 11kV. The turnkey power package was designed, mobilised and commissioned in just 25 days, with Aggreko technicians remaining on-site after the commissioning to operate and maintain the equipment. The additional power supply, commissioned in October 2010, has ensured that businesses in the Tamil Nadu state have not been faced with power shortages.

S. Elangovan, Managing Director of Kaveri Gas Power Ltd, said, "Bringing 6.6 mw of power online in just 25 days is an impressive achievement and I am very pleased that the Aggreko power package has operated flawlessly. Companies in Tamil Nadu rely on KGPL to provide them with reliable power and with Aggreko we can use rental power to boost our capacity in the short term whenever the needs arise."

Abid Ahmed, Country Manager, Aggreko India, commented: "This is our first gas-fuelled multi-megawatt project in India and we are very pleased to be working with a company as highly-reputed as KGPL. Rental power is a costeffective alternative for businesses and utilities in India and this project proves that it can be used whenever power supply is reduced, including during shut-downs or maintenance of existing facilities."

After the launch of Aggreko's first depot at Wagholi, Pune in 2008, Aggreko recently inaugurated its second depot in Delhi.
